Western European coins in the treasure from Kopilovtsi village, Montana region (16th – 17th c.)
In 1921 a treasure from Kopilovtsi village, Montana region entered the National Museum of Archaeology in Sofia. It contains silver jewels, appliqués from a bride’s wreath, temple pendants, a necklace, bracelets, rings, buttons and a silver chain with seven thalers. The jewellery is work of Chiprovtsi Goldsmiths’ School from the 17th c. The treasure contains also silver Ottoman and Western European coins from the 16th – 17th c. The latter have been adapted to fit to clothing or jewels as additional decoration. The coins are ten in number coming from various countries – Poland, France, Spain and the Republic of Ragusa.
